Maybe your story is like mine. When I got back into shooting handguns several years ago, I got to a point where it seemed like I just hit a wall. One shot was accurate. Follow up shots were pretty good. But rapid shots always got me into trouble. My grip just always felt uncomfortable. It was inconsistent. Mostly because my support hand was riding on top of my primary hand and had very little contact with the frame of the gun. I tried the ol' wrap your index finger around the trigger guard hold but it made things inconsistent. The simple fact was I couldn't do it with a light attached on my carry and bedside guns. What I wanted was to be able to use a similar grip on everything. It just seemed like every gun was too small for my hands, even the ones with large backstraps. I practiced, took a couple classes, and watched a lot of YouTube trainers to try and figure out what could work best for me.
One day I was watching a video with Robert Vogel about shooting fast and I noticed that the knuckles on his primary hand lined up with the corners on the front of his grip. My knuckles were halfway around the front of the grip. Even with a "large" backstrap on. I watched more videos with Taran Butler and other Grand Masters and all of them had primary grips that lined up on the corners of their grips. (All of these top shooters also had enough room on the other side to get the meat of their secondary hand packed firmly onto the frame and not on top of their fingers...) This got me thinking that maybe part of my inconsistency was related to just how well my hand actually fit on the gun. Maybe the bones of their fingers being flatter against the front of the grip actually gave them an advantage. Maybe a better balance of grip pressure using both hands made a difference. And maybe I didn't need to adjust my grip so much as I needed to mod my grip. So I went in search of something to do just that. I thought that surely somebody had created some kind of aftermarket backstrap for Glocks. You can get anything for them, right? But nope. Nothing. I tried grip sleeves but they made the grip feel even more like a 2x4 and didn't really solve the problem. So I set about making something for myself with plumbers putty on a factory strap. And after a whole lot of trial and error, I found something that worked pretty well. And you know what? It felt pretty good too. So I carried it and shot with it a while and liked it so much I made similar ones for all my Glocks.
And then I thought about the guys that I'd read online posts from who were also looking for a grip mod for large hands. I remember the advice some gave them to "train around" their too small grips. Now it seemed to me this "advice" was probably given by well-meaning people with average sized hands. But I bet those guys don't "train around" the seat in their vehicle. I bet the first thing they did when they bought that vehicle was to adjust their driver's seat. Because while you can drive OK from a seat that doesn't fit right, you can drive better and more comfortably in one that does. So I decided that if I got something out of this backstrap design, there are probably other guys that would too. Two years of nights and weekends later, I'm proud to have something that might help others get more out of their 19s and 23s. And I hope to be able to get some of these other models out there soon. Thanks for reading and thanks for your interest.
